Stars set to shine in feast of theatre fun

Former eastenders star Michelle Ryan is among the stars heading to the Northampton theatre this autumn.

Mr RipleyThe actress, known to many as Zoe Slater, will play Marge Sherwood in The Talented Mr Ripley (see front page image) which is one of the venue’s ‘Made in Northampton’ productions.

It will transport audiences to Italy in the 1950s.

Adapted for the stage by dramatist Phyllis Nagy from Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling thriller, the tale follows the exploits of an enigmatic conman.

It takes to the stage from September 17-October 9.

The other ‘Made in Northampton’ production is the Jacobean masterpiece The Duchess of Malfi.

Set among the corruption and claustrophobia of a 16th century Italian court, the play is a vision of one woman’s courage and dignity in the face of a dark and terrifying world.

The adaptation runs from October 15-30 and will feature live music by influential late-Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo, the Prince of Venosa.

Musicals heading to town include Tell Me On A Sunday starring Claire Sweeney (August 30-September 4), Chess (from September 14), Spamalot starring Todd Carty (September 27- October 2), Sunshine on Leith with Billy Boyd (from November 9) and the return of Dreamboats and Petticoats (from November 22).

The hugely successful Calendar Girls also returns to the theatre from November 15, starring Lynda Bellingham, Ruth Madoc and Bernie Nolan.

There will again be a number of comedians taking to the stage including Frankie Boyle, Sean Lock, Ardal O’Hanlan, Chris Addison, Ross Noble and Al Murray.

There is also drama, dance and a host of music to be enjoyed including acts such as former Joseph star Lee Mead.

Over Christmas young and young at heart can enjoy The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in the Royal and Jack and the Beanstalk with Ray Quinn on the Derngate stage.
