The toys are back in town...

BY GAVIN MILLER
Even as an adult (allegedly), I have no hesitation in saying Toy Story is one of my movie guilty pleasures, which is solidified with the outstanding Toy Story 3 (U, 1hr 40mins).

Toy StoryIt’s hard to believe this was once going to be a direct-to-DVD release, and now the pioneering computer-generated animation has become Disney/Pixar’s biggest ever hit in the States.

Chock-full with humour, emotion, plot twists, and of course, the breathtakingly luscious visuals, this is about as good as it gets and it’s just as enthralling for adults as it is for children.

After the initial over-familiarity of the first twenty minutes, which could have been from either of the first two films, this really turns into that favourite toy box you had as a kid.

Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack) and co are back, but this time pining for a grown-up Andy’s attention as he prepares for college.

The gang are then inadvertently disposed to a daycare centre where they meet the welcoming Lotso Bear (Ned Beatty). But the initial elation turns to despair as they are kept under lock-and-key to be abused by volatile children, while the older inhabitants have it cushier with the well-behaved kids.

Needless to say an exit strategy of The Great Escape-sized proportions is hatched to get past the devious Lotso “the evil bear that smells of strawberries” and his crew. But this is so much more than a simple escape story, with Michael Keaton shining as the voice of Ken who arguably steals the show in some hilarious altercations with Barbie, and when Buzz is accidentally reconfigured in Spanish, you know why Pixar are still king when it comes to next-gen animation.

From start to finish this is nigh on flawless and oozes genius from every pore, even to the heart-rending finale that will leave fans of a more emotional disposition wiping a tear or two from under their 3D glasses (or not if you’re watching it in 2D).

Possibly the best ever second sequel of all time? Yep. The best animation of all-time? You betcha. Computer-generated animation has just turned epic.
