Fans of the Cobblers are starting to feel the nerves as the big Carling Cup match against Premier League Liverpool approaches.

Supporters will be hoping for a better result than the last time the two clubs met - a 5-0 defeat at Anfield in the 1958 FA Cup.

One man in particular remembers that day. Keith Allen, 78, has been a Cobblers fan all his life, and 52 years ago made the journey to Merseyside.

Mr Allen, from Kingsthorpe, said: “I was at the game in 1958 and at the time my father worked for the railways.

“He was part of the group that arranged for eight trains to take all the fans to Liverpool. Even the Cobblers team was sitting in the first carriage on the first train.

“Each train was packed with fans but not a single light bulb was broken, that was how good natured the trip was.

“We went up with my mother and father and even though we lost, it was a great day out.” Northampton Town play Liverpool on Wednesday, September 22 at Anfield but Mr Allen isn’t sure if he will attend.

“I don’t get to as many games these days but if I don’t go, I will certainly be cheering them on whilst watching them on the television.”
