Lib Dems rap tories over cuts

BY JONATHAN REILLY
Northamptonshire’s conservative’s have been branded the ‘nasty party’ by opposition leaders over their plans to increase the cost of social services.

This comes as Northamptonshire County Council’s scrutiny committee re-examines the proposed charges which will affect transport services and meals on wheels.

Cllr Brendan Glynane, leader of the opposition, said: “We’ve said all along that these eye-watering increases will hit the vulnerable hardest. Transport charges are going up 300 per cent. The cost of meals on wheels for people taking up the service has gone up to £6.26, an increase of over 100 per cent.

“This is an attempt to kill off the service. It is clear from these increases that Conservatives are hell-bent on hitting the vulnerable.

Northamptonshire Conservatives are still the nasty party.

“We have asked the council’s Scrutiny Committee to look at this issue because we think the Conservatives have got it wrong.

Worse still, it is highly unlikely they will even make the savings they think they will, as they haven’t considered that if services cost more, fewer people will use them.

“The Conservatives really need to think again on this attack on our most vulnerable citizens.” The report was examined by the council’s scrutiny management committee yesterday. The Tories declined to comment until after the meeting.
