Former Northampton Town director Tony Clarke has said that the Cobblers’ dream Carling Cup tie against Liverpool is a “once in a blue moon occasion”.
The club was drawn against the Premier League giants on Saturday after defeating Championship side Reading on penalties last week.
The Northampton Borough Councillor, who is also a lifelong fan, stepped down from the board of the club last month.
He said: “This sort of occasion happens once in a blue moon.
“Whilst nobody is expecting us to go up there and win, we can dream that something magical might happen.
“I’m already there now, thinking about it and I think it will capture the imagination and set us up for the season.” The fixture will take place the week of September 20, with Cobblers fans travelling up to Merseyside to see their team take on the five times European champions.
Mr Clarke believes there will be a buzz around the town in the weeks leading up to the big game.
“There always is a buzz when there is a big fixture,” he said.
“The fans get excited and the anticipation spreads like wildfire.
“This is one of the massive advantages of having a league club in our town.” The away fixture means that not only do the fans get a good day out but the club itself can profit from playing at Anfield, and potentially lucrative television money.
Mr Clarke said: “I’m pleased for the fans, obviously and the club but most of all I’m pleased for the chairman, David Cardoza, who should be pleased for the finances.”
