POLICE are looking for a man who stole a woman’s handbag during a distraction burglary in Northampton
The incident happened in Broadway, between 6.30pm and 6.45pm on Thursday, February 2.
The woman who lives in a mid-terrace property head a loud bang at her front door.
She found a man standing in her doorway, the door had been forced open by an unknown instrument and the fragments of the lock were on the floor.
The man told the woman something had happened to the water and it wouldn't be drinkable because of some work being carried out up the road.
The man then entered the kitchen and went under the sink.
He asked the victim to change a twenty pound note for two ten pound notes and then took the victim's handbag from the front room and left the property.
The man is described as white and he spoke with a local accent.
He is aged 20-30, 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins tall and of medium build with dark eyes and he was wearing a fawn-coloured woolly hat and possibly a light-coloured top
A spokesperson for the Police said: “Householders they should not open the door to anyone they do not know or who they are not expecting.
“Representatives from a water company do not require access your property to check the water supply.
“If anyone enters or damages your property in these circumstances, call 999.”
