Should taxis have an age limit?

BY LAUREN DAVIS

THERE’S less than two weeks left to have your say on whether Northampton should introduce an age limit for taxis.

Around half of the country’s local authorities have an age restriction for taxis, but in Northampton the existing policy only says that Hackney Carriages, or black cabs, must be less than three years old when licensed for the first time. After that there is no upper age limit.

There is also no lower and upper age limit for Private Hire Vehicles.

Northampton Borough Council’s Licensing Committee met at the end of September last year and agreed to consult with those working in the industry and members of the public about whether to review its policy on age limits for taxis.

As well as consulting on whether to adopt an age policy common to all taxis, the council is also seeking views on whether to change the minimum engine capacity of Private Hire Vehicles and if certain vehicles should be exempt.

The consultation runs until noon on 29 February.

Questionnaires are available online at www.northampton.gov.uk/taxiconsultation or for a paper copy call Northampton Borough Council’s community safety team on 01604 838968.
