It's party time on the Hemmingwell

BY LAWRENCE JOHN

A FREE party kicks off on the Hemmingwell on Sunday.

The estate, which had a poor reputation, has been transformed into a safe and welcoming area, thanks to the efforts of the community supported by the borough council.

Hemmingwell Square has been the main focus of the transformation, with hanging baskets, new benches and bins, plus a community notice.

The council supported the residents’ association in successfully applying for lottery funding of £27,261.50, which made the biggest changes of all to the square.

The underpass was tiled, the brick wall on the approach to it was reduced in height to make it feel safer, and the whole community became involved in landscaping the banks.

A community mosaic ‘the faces of Hemmingwell’ was also created and installed on the previously unused pedestal.

Ward councillor, Cllr GrahamLawman said: “The residents of the Hemmingwell estate have shown that being at the heart of any change means that they take pride and ownership in the results.

“The community feels safer, more people access services and shops, and the underpass is kept free of graffiti.

“The square has become an area that local people of all ages meet in and enjoy and we are delighted to be supporting the residents in celebrating these wonderful achievements.”

The family party will be opened by the Mayor of Wellingborough, Cllr Lora Lawman, at 2pm.
