The first inland maritime charity unit could open in a town.
The Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) is to set up a shop in Rushden town centre but is hoping to move to the proposed Rushden Lakes development if it goes ahead.
The service will train people to use purpose made rescue craft.
The MVS is a nationally recognised maritime charity and training organisation with more than 400 members in more than 30 units around the coast and estuaries of the UK.
Maurice Weight, volunteer officer, said: “Although based in Rushden we have attracted interest from Northampton, Milton Keynes and Bedford, making the unit perfectly placed.”
