Rough sign is play on words

BY LAWRENCE JOHN

VANDALISED signs which read Well . . .rough instead of Wellingborough have proved the inspiration behind a new play.

Last spring, signs entering the town were vandalised and as a result it was put under the spotlight.

Now The Castle is looking for people who live, or have lived, in Wellingborough to share their tales with playwright Deborah Gearing, who is working with the theatre to write this year’s community production.

President of Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce, Alan Piggot said: “It is very tongue-in-cheek but I don’t like the fact that someone did this to the sign.

“Wellingborough is not rough in any respect but I don’t want people to have a chip on their shoulder about it.”

Deborah is looking for all types of stories, from arrivals or departures, meetings or accidents, rifts or reconciliations, comic or tragic incidents, things that happened at work or at home and much more.

People who keen to share their tales can write to Sarah Chiswell-Hornett at The Castle, Wellingborough, NN8 1XA or email sarah@thecastle.org.uk

Those interested in taking part in a story share session should call Sarah on 01933 221847.
