The Red Hot restaurant at Sixfields, Northampton, is well alight and burning to the ground.

At least four fire engines are at the scene battling flames that are raging allover the building.

One section of the eaterie has already collapsed.

The area round the restaurant has been cordoned off.

Eye witness Kate Williams said: "The whole roof is alight. There are about four fire engines and more arriving I think. I can't see any ambulances."

The Cineworld multi-screen cinema next to Red Hot has been evacuated.

The fire started just before 11pm.

It is not thought anyone has been hurt in the incident.

The Sixfields site was created on a former landfill dump and was built with vents to allow the release of gases that might build up as the tips waste materials decay.

The evacuation is believed to be a precaution against the possibility of gases igniting.

The pictures are by Steve Taylor and Kate Williams.
