Starmer can enjoy break with a smile

AFC Rushden & Diamonds head into the Christmas break of their inaugural season sitting fourth in the Northants Senior Youth League West Division.

A 3-1 victory over bottom side Olney Town last Thursday ensured they ended 2011 on a high thanks to goals from Blake Helsdown, Connor Bell and Mason Thomas.

Mark Starmer was delighted that the Diamonds finished the year with a victory, although he felt his side should have scored more than the three goals they managed.

"It was three points that were fully deserved,” said the manager. “The only downside is that we haven't scored ten goals which we probably deserved with the performance.

“If it had been 8-0 at half time then it would have been a fair reflection.

“I thought we dominated some of the football, some of the movement was really good and we continued that all but for ten seconds in the second half.

“That was a good game, the boys played really well and that takes us into Christmas with a smile on our faces."

It took until three minutes before the interval for Rushden to break the deadlock at East Street, with Helsdown driving home from a Louis Smith cross.

That was followed in the 44th minute by Bell slotting in an Ashley Meeks cross, although hosts Olney pulled one back through James Bates four minutes into the second half.

Thomas’ third goal of the season settled the contest in favour of the visitors, while substitute Lewi Williams had one ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Rushden do not play again in the league until the home game against Bugbrooke St Michaels on Thursday January 12.

They had arranged a friendly with United Counties League side Rushden & Higham United tonight at their Hayden Road ground.

However, that match has now been called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
