Turiccki tally helps tuck away Uni side

EBL Men’s Division Three (South)

Oxford Brookes University 53

Wellingborough Phoenix 75

Daniel Turiccki led the way with 16 points for Wellingborough Phoenix as they made it two league wins out of two away to Oxford Brookes University on Saturday.

Both teams started slowly, but it was Phoenix's defence that stepped up a gear to stop Oxford from finding a bucket in the last four minutes of the first quarter.

That allowed their offence to thrive, hitting Oxford for a 15-0 run led by Turiccki from close range.

The Phoenix defence continued to wear down the University and resulted in the Wellingborough men taking a 41-23 lead into the locker room at half time.

Phoenix continued to dominate at both ends of the court throughout the third but took their foot of the gas in the fourth, running out winning 75-53.

“We played relatively well in three quarters today,” said coach Barry Powell, adding: “We are still growing as a unit and we all realise we still have a lot more to give.

“What was very pleasing today was the performance of our young point guard James Rutter who was composed throughout this very physical game.”

Phoenix followed up that performance with a 79-55 win over University of Northampton Trojans in the National Shield second round on Sunday. They now face Loughborugh in round three.
