Aidy Boothroyd was left somewhat less than impressed with Michael Hoganson after the winger opted to join Derby County on trial – despite having been offered a one-year contract by Northampton Town.

The former Newcastle United winger had been with the Cobblers as a trialist, featuring in the friendly matches against Corby Town and Cogenhoe United, and subsequently impressed enough to be offered a deal.

However, Hoganson was absent from the Northampton team for Saturday’s game against Chelsea Under-21s and it transpired that he was playing for Derby in their friendly at Burton Albion.

By a quirk of fate, the Rams travel to Sixfields on Tuesday evening for a friendly and Boothroyd will not be happy if Hoganson ends up playing for them in that encounter.

The Cobblers boss was at least able to laugh about it after the 2-0 loss against Chelsea, half-jokingly saying: “I'll run on and kick him myself. I'll run on and two-foot him and his agent,” although it is clear that he is unhappy about the way the situation has unfolded.

"He was offered a contract and we may well see him on Tuesday because he's gone to Derby,” said Boothroyd. “If he plays for them then great. If he's getting a game in their under-18s and reserves - if that's what he wants to do then fine by me.

“The offer is still there for him, but it won't be there for too much longer. He'll decide what he wants to do and we'll take it from there."
