Andy Holt says he would be honoured if he was named as Northampton Town captain for the 2010/11 League Two campaign, but will still be on hand to give plenty of encouragement if he isn't.
With club skipper Craig Hinton on the transfer list and having seen little action in pre-season so far, the armband has passed to Holt who filled the role towards the end of last season.
The utility man has led the side in all four of their friendly matches and manager Ian Sampson admitted after the 1-0 loss to Coventry City that there is no-one else currently in the running to take over from Hinton.
"If the gaffer makes me captain then I would love to be captain, but at the minute I'm just trying to get my fitness up and if I'm not captain then I'm still going to try to be as vocal as I can on the pitch, and help as many people through as I can," said Holt
"I think I do the same role with or without the armband, but it would obviously be an honour to have it.
"It's a massive turn around because at one stage I was leaving. I always wanted to stay and made it clear that I did, and we were able to come to some common ground in the summer. I was delighted to sign for another two years."
Holt's future at the Cobblers seems to be as a centre half, having originally started as a left sided midfielder who was also capable of playing at full back if needed.
But the 32-year-old is enjoying his new role in the heart of defence alongside Dean Beckwith and trialist full back Marcus Hll, who he hopes Northampton will be able to get signed up.
Holt said: "I've got a fantastic partner at the minute playing with Deano. He's very experience - he's played there all his career - he's loud and vocal, and he's helping me through."
"Marcus is a naturally left footed lad and he wants to get forward. Again, he's experienced and he's talking all of the time. Hopefully we can get a settled back four where we're all vocal and know what we're going to do."
He has also been impressed by how Sampson and assistant Malcolm Crosby have conducted pre-season training, and believes that the addition of fitness coach Glen Thurgood will serve to further improve the squad's performance.
"This year we're doing things the most professionally I have ever seen," said Holt.
"We've got the gaffer and Crozzer taking care of the football side of things, then we've got Glen who is doing the nutrition and taking care of our fitness, speed and stamina. I think we'll do OK this year."
