Northampton Town have clinched the signing of Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Lee Nicholls on loan until the end of October.
The Cobblers have been searching for a new goalkeeper to cover for the injured Shane Higgs for some time, and that need became even greater following the release of Neal Kitson.
However, manager Aidy Boothroyd has now managed to bring in Nicholls, who had a loan spell with Accrington Stanley in League Two last season, for three months.
“We needed a keeper who has talent and Football League experience," said Boothroyd. "He is a good keeper, he did well at this level last season and he knows a bit about League Two.
"He has come here to get games under his belt. We are in a fortunate position as we already have an experienced, quality goalkeeper on our books and he is well on the way to recovery after a nasty injury.
“In addition, in Dean Snedker we have a young goalkeeper of massive potential also on our books and that is fantastic for us.”
Nicholls is a graduate of the Wigan youth set-up and aged just 17 was named as a substitute for an FA Cup tie with Hull City in January 2010.
He has had loan spells with Hartlepool United, Shrewsbury Town and Sheffield Wednesday, and played nine games while with Accrington earlier this year.
In addition to that, Nicholls has been capped once by the England Under-19 side and was also an unused squad member for the 2010 European Under-19 Championship team.
