Neal Kitson has had his contract terminated by Northampton Town to allow him to return to the USA to deal with some family issues, the club have confirmed.

The American goalkeeper had been absent for last week’s pre-season friendlies against Cogenhoe United and Chelsea Under-21s, having been back in his homeland then.

He then returned and was on the bench for Tuesday night’s game at home to Derby County, but Kitson’s stay at the club has now come to an end.

“Neal is going home," said boss Aidy Boothroyd. "He has some family issues that he needs to resolve and so we have terminated his contract to allow him to go back to the United States."

Kitson first joined the club on trial back in January before signing until the end of the season from USL Pro Division side Rochester Rhinos.

He made a memorable debut for the Cobblers away two Crewe Alexandra in March, saving a last minute penalty to ensured Town a valuable point.

Kitson saved another penalty the following week, helping Northampton earn a 2-1 victory over Oxford United and went on to make eight appearances in total for Town.
