Guinan going still an option

Ian Sampson admitted that Steve Guinan could still leave Northampton Town despite his goalscoring form so far in pre-season.

The striker, who remains on the transfer list, hit a first half double in Tuesday night’s 2-0 win at Nuneaton Town, bringing his total to four from six friendlies.

But afterwards boss Sampson said: “Steve Guinan finished well, he's a goal scorer. If an offer came in for him though we might have to think twice.

“I've got four strikers and they are all in my thoughts. No-one has cemented their place yet.

"Players can still catch my eye, but Courtney Herbert and Steve Guinan did catch my eye.”

Sampson gave starts to youth teamers Charlie Death, Malachi Farquharson and Alex Konstantinou, while Michael Jacobs, who scored twice in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at home to Watford, and Greg Kaziboni were second half substitutes.

But Sampson is looking for the youngsters to step it up a level, saying: “What you see with younger players is this – It wasn't good enough, they are inconsistent. Although we've been raving about them, they soon get brought back down to Earth.

“Once we changed things round [at half time] it got sloppy and it wasn't a great team performance.”

The Cobblers now host a Birmingham City XI on Sunday in their final pre-season match and Sampson’s only worry is that everyone comes through unscathed.

He said: "We've worked on two formations all preseason.

“I would have thought that to get everyone through and available for Torquay is the top priority.

"It's not about getting scalps, it means nothing at then end of the day. I'd rather have 20 players available."

Craig Hinton and Chris Dunn are the only injury concerns for Northampton at present.
