Louis Moult has signed a one-year contract with Northampton Town following a successful trial spell with the club.
The former Stoke City striker came through their youth system, but was released by the Potters at the end of last season.
The 20-year-old has spent the last few weeks on trial at Sixfields and has shown Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd enough to be offered a deal.
"This is a good chance for Louis and it's up to him now to take it," said Boothroyd.
"He was a bit of a child star who has lost his way a little bit which can happen at big clubs.
"He's done well in training and he's shown enough for us to give him a chance and invest in him.
"He's a goalscorer, his touch is good and his movement is excellent."
A prolific goalscorer in the Stoke Academy and reserve side, Moult made his professional debut as a substitute against Leyton Orient in August 2009.
His first team opportunities were limited at the Britannia Stadium, but he has spent time on loan at Bradford City, Mansfield Town - twice - and Accrington Stanley.
