Chaminda Vaas has helped organise a pre-season batting camp for three of his Northamptonshire team mates, who will be heading to his homeland of Sri Lanka on Sunday.

David Murphy, Ben Howgego and Stephen Peters have all paid for the trip themselves, while Northants overseas player Vaas has helped sort accommodation and bowlers for training sessions.

Top order batsman Howgego and wicketkeeper Murphy will spend three weeks there, while Peters will join them for ten days.

Murphy was delighted to have been able to get the trip arranged, having previously discussed something similar with his team mates.

He said: “I was speaking to Ben and Stephen last season and wanted to go and work on my skills in a warmer climate during the winter.

“Chaminda has been brilliant in helping us with this trip, and I’m sure it will play a big part in my development and future progress.”

The trio will meet up with former Sri Lanka international Vaas while out there where they will have the opportunity to train in the warm weather and work on batting against spin.

Northants head coach David Capel said: “I’m sure this will be a very good opportunity for them.

“When a trip like this is properly thought out and organised, I think it offers the players a boost.

“For them to train and work on their techniques, especially against spin, by going on a short trip like this is great and I would advocate this kind of trip to others.

“They go with our full support.”
