Northamptonshire 2nd XI will face Midlands rivals Leicestershire in the two-inning 40 over trial to be played this year.
The knock-out competition sees the second teams of the 18 first class counties play two innings of 20 overs a side in each game.
It will also feature a further trial of the pink ball to see how it performs in English conditions and with the sides wearing white clothing.
Special provision has been made in the playing conditions for the reallocation of overs in interrupted matches to take account of the two-phase nature of each innings.
The Duckworth/Lewis method will also apply in matches where overs are lost after the commencement of the match.
The winners of the game between Northants and Leicestershire will be at home to either Surrey or Middlesex in the quarter finals. Game dates have yet to be confirmed.
