Academy youngsters get chance in Saints sevens squad

Northampton Saints have named their 12 man squad for tomorrow night's leg of the JP Morgan Asset Management Premier Rugby Sevens Series at Franklin's Gardens.

The Northampton team features mostly players from the Academy, with former Saints, and current England Sevens internationals, John Brake and Tom Powell also in the side.

Academy forwards coach Mark Hopley and Birmingham & Solihull head coach Russell Earnshaw take charge of the side, who are first up against Gloucester at 7.30pm.

Bath and Exeter Chiefs are the other two sides competing, with the top two on the night going through to join Saracens, Harlequins, Newcastle Falcons and Sale Sharks at the Recreation Ground next Friday.

A crowd of at least 5,000 are expected at the Gardens and Academy head coach Alan Dickens said: "We’re quite fortunate at Northampton that we’ve got excellent followers

"It gives them a taste of summer rugby as well. For the boys that are new to the club, it gives them a chance to play at Franklin’s Gardens, which is a great place to play, so I think it is positive all round."
